Playa de Oro RV Park
Playa de Oro RV Park is a phenomenal place to camp in Puerto Penasco (aka Rocky Point), Mexico. While Playa de Oro is generally geared towards RV campers, it is a great place to tent camp if you want to explore the town (or are on spring break), and is also a great alternative to the Sandy Beach camping area. Playa de Oro RV Park has many great amenities including the friendly staff that work there, it’s proximity to the town of Rocky Point, the onsite market and restaurant, laundromats, spotless bathrooms (with showers), beach access, and onsite security guards.
Each campsite is simply a large parking space in the RV park, with plenty of space for an RV or several tents and vehicles, but access to amenities is only a few steps away within Playa de Oro.
Playa de Oro RV Park Bottom Line
Camping at Playa de Oro RV Park is often a better experience than stay at the town’s many hotels and motels, and it often provides you with a great story after camping there. Many of the campsites on the edge of Playa de Oro are taken by year-round residents or people with permanent spaces, but the middle is often wide-open for people to camp with their own RVs or tents. Contrary to what you may expect, tent camping is fantastic here if you are looking to experience the town; there are a couple of cantinas directly behind Playa de Oro, and it is within safe walking distance of many of the local hotspots such as Manny’s and Pink Cadillac. Other local destinations are just a short cab ride away, with taxis available right outside the front gate.
As we are all aware, northern Mexico has not been the most friendly place in recent years, but Rocky Point is generally safe, and we have never had a safety issue in the many times we have camped Play de Oro RV Park, and the friendly onsite security guards make sure it stays that way.

What To Do
Hang out on the beach, see the town, have a siesta, drink in a cantina. Go see the Peacemakers at the Sunset Cantina in June and October-ish.
Playa de Oro is located in Puerto Penasco (i.e. Rocky Port), which has an alternate name of Rocky Point in English. Retired Lt. Robert William Hale Hardy of the British Royal Fleet was sailing in this area searching for pearls and precious metals in 1826 and he named the area Rocky Point.
Rocky Point, Mexico is home to the closest beach town to Phoenix, Arizona. Beating out both Los Angeles and San Diego.
